Empowering the Future of Conservation
The Glacier Conservation Corps (GCC) is making a lasting impact in Glacier National Park through a unique partnership with the Montana Conservation Corps. By bringing together youth, young adults, local tribal members, and veterans, this initiative provides participants with hands-on experience in conservation work that not only benefits the park but also prepares them for future careers with the National Park Service (NPS) and other conservation-focused organizations.
The work of the GCC goes beyond simply maintaining the beauty of Glacier National Park. Participants engage in a wide range of projects, from Citizen Science research and trail maintenance to native plant restoration and historic structure rehabilitation. They work directly with the NPS to address critical conservation needs, gaining invaluable skills and contributing to the park’s long-term preservation.
Our 4% donation went toward supporting GCC participants, who this year alone contributed over 2,000 hours of work in the park, achieving remarkable results, including:
- Removing more than 13.5 acres of noxious weeds
- Renovating or improving over 54 campsites, campgrounds, and recreation sites
- Conducting 9 biological surveys
- Removing or repairing 1/4 mile of fencing
- Completing 2 miles of trail maintenance
- Loading and disposing of 45 dump trailer loads of brush for fuels reduction
- Repairing and painting 80 picnic tables
These efforts not only enhance the visitor experience but also play a vital role in conserving Glacier’s natural and cultural resources. The Glacier Conservation Corps exemplifies how collaboration, hard work, and a shared love for the environment can lead to meaningful change. By empowering the next generation of conservationists, the program ensures that Glacier National Park will continue to thrive for years to come.
